Sudbury Spring Sprint Triathlon Race Report – Jason

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

May 9th was my first tri of the year, although it was a pool swim.  This was good news as the race temperature was 38 degrees with winds up to 40 mph.  The race was a 400 yard swim, 7 mile bike and 2.3 mile run.

Swim start times were determined by estimated times submitted with the race registration.  I had forecast 7 minutes which put me around the middle of all racers.  Everyone started 10 seconds apart in the pool, swimming down and back in each lane and then moving to the next lane and doing the same until the other side of the pool.

Getting ready to go:

I tried to settle into my pace but very quickly overtook the person who started in front of me.  With the 2 way traffic in the lane it was pretty tough to actually pass someone as it required a near full sprint.  This really disrupted my rhythm and put me out of breath.  Knowing it was a short race I just kept it going though, eventually passing 3 or 4 racers during the swim.

Out of the pool and into the freezing air.  Finished the swim in 6:53 or 1:42/100 yards.  This gave me 4th out of 15 in my age group and 104 out of 428 overall.  Pretty happy with that as it was about top 25% for both and very close to my target time.

According to my parents some people really suffered in the cold, with some being forced to drop out due to the wind chill.  I took the extra time to bundle up which killed my T1 time but allowed me to finish.  T1 was 3:41 – yikes!

The bike was not as strong as I would have liked.  However, I still passed many people and extended my streak of not being passed by fellow competitors, but I did not feel like my ride was overly strong.  My lack of power and 40mph winds were the primary factor.  I also elected not to use my deep rim wheels due to the wind.  I would have used the rear wheel but had issues getting it to inflate.  My bike split was 22:20, only 19.2 mph, which gave me 5th in my age group and 88th overall.

T2 was a lot faster, in 1:14.

On to the run and immediately had to fight to lower the HR, which took a bit of time to get under control.  The only issue was I was running significantly slower than in Greenwich.  I really think it was the cold and wind, but who knows.  I started to get into a groove, but then the course went onto a trail and at the exit the marshals did not give a solid indication of where to go and I was not familiar with the race course.  So I ended up taking a wrong turn.  From the GPS I can tell this added 1:22 to my race time, which would have moved me up 19 spots overall and 1 in my age group.  You can see the out and back right in the middle of the top blue line.

In the end my run time was 20:21 for 2.2 miles (I think they had the course at longer than it was, since my distance was shorter with an off course excursion).  This put me at 9:15 pace which was very disappointing after running almost 1 min/mile faster a week earlier.  My run was 13th in my age group and 266 overall.

Greenwich Biathlon Race Report – Jason

Monday, May 10, 2010

May 2 was the Greenwich Biathlon – a race I also did back in 2005.  Humid, warmer temperatures greeted us at the start line.  We also had all 3 Tri Guys at the race.

The run portion of the race takes place on a 2.5 mile loop on a peninsula in the Sound while the bike course makes a 10 mile loop through old Greenwich, including a fairly significant hill at the halfway point.

Run #1

Got off to a fast start but pulled back to my pace within the first 5 minutes.  Kept the heart rate steady and let the pace drift around.  Overall finished with 8:29/mile pace for the first segment.  This was faster than anticipated, but still left me in last place of the 3 tri guys by over a minute.

Some shots at the exit of the first transition.  Struggled to get in my left pedal.

Really felt pretty good on the bike, again passing lots of competitors, and not being passed by anyone.  Averaged 21.1mph for the ride.  There were no intermediate time splits – but I suspect all 3 of the Tri Guys had similar splits based on spectator observations.

Interestingly, there is a very distinct pattern on the chart that I didn’t notice during the race.  Prior to the hill you can see the ride was all solidly in heart rate zone 4, but after it doesn’t get above zone 3.  Not sure what was going on there as I didn’t feel I dialed it back.  Maybe it was just the general downhill trend in the second half of the race.

The aftermath in transition:

On to run #2.  Coming out of transition, Marc was visible about 150 yards up the road.  While I had 2 bad sections where my pace went over 9:00/mile, I kept him in sight to the halfway point.  At this point another non-Tri Guy friend zoomed by me like I was standing still.  You can see the heart race increase in the second half of the race as I made a late push to try to catch Marc.

Greenwich Biathlon 5-2-2010, Pace - Time run2

From mile 1.5 to 2 my pace averaged 8:13/mile and then brought it down to 7:21 pace for the next quarter mile.  At the final turn I had pulled to within 10 yards, but could get no closer (as you see in the first photo below).  I even couldn’t really sprint to make the final junction, but I guess I could feel comfortable knowing I gave it my maximum during the entire run.  In the end I finished 4 seconds behind Marc and 3:51 behind Rico, who runs at another level.

Final times:

Bike                26:25     21.1 mph

Run 2               19:12     8:22/mile pace

Total time 1:08:55

116/260 overall

42/70 Men 30-39

In 2005, I did this race in 1:16:16 and finished 162/269 overall and 21/24 in the Men 20-29 age group.   I was really happy with the improvement in total time, and my runs far exceeded how fast I have run to date.

Race report to follow for the Greenwich Biathlon.  Not a great week of training.  Cold and windy weather kept me limited to swimming earlier in the week, and off on Thursday.  Friday got stuck in the city for work and didn’t get home in time for a workout, Saturday couldn’t do a tough workout with the race the next day.  Hoping to get back on track next week.
